Elizabeth’s experience at Belgrade AIR:
The Belgrade Artist in Residence program provided me a comfortable, quiet and thought provoking environment to create new artworks. The cultural immersion I experienced thanks to Gordana Zikic opened my eyes to investigate new connections between landscapes and the people that inhabit them. As I visited cultural institutions, had meaningful conversations with Serbian artists and toured the city, I was interested in the constant presence of politics and recent historical conflicts in day-to-day life in Belgrade. All of the artists I was introduced to were open and willing to discuss their personal histories with me, as well as their opinions on the social and political history of Serbia and former Yugoslavia. Gordana Zikic took care to ensure that I had a well rounded residency experience and helped facilitate my investigation into the topics that interested me and related to my art. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities I had to teach and present my artwork to Serbian artists. I also appreciated the gallery shows, university visits and conversations that helped me understand the state of the arts in Belgrade. I look forward to returning to Belgrade to see the evolution of the city and its residence as the political conflicts of the 1990’s fade further into the past.
